Do silicone drying mats drain into the sink or hold the water?

Pick 0038 · Silicone dish drying mat, two per pack

This mat drains rather than absorbs, and the built in channel carries water off the mat, but only if one edge is placed touching the sink. Placed in the middle of a counter it collects water instead. AddToPick rates the pair worth buying with an important caveat: only one customer review exists for this product, so most of what is known comes from the listing rather than from use.

What it is

The mat is a silicone sheet with a moulded drainage channel, sold two to a pack at 20 by 15 inches each. Dishes go straight onto the mat and the water runs along the channel rather than soaking into fabric.

Silicone is the material despite some listings describing these as stone drying mats. Nothing about the product is stone, and the behaviour described on this page is silicone behaviour.

How it works

Placement is the whole thing. The channel moves water toward one edge, and that edge has to overhang or touch the sink for the water to leave. A mat placed centrally on a counter has nowhere to send the water and behaves like a tray.

This is the difference from an absorbent mat. A microfibre mat holds the water and has to be hung up or laundered. A silicone mat moves the water and gets rinsed instead, which is why the placement matters more than it would with fabric.

What reviewers report

Who it is not for

Questions people ask

Does the mat drain by itself?

The moulded channel carries water toward one edge, so the mat has to be positioned with that edge at the sink. Placed centrally on a counter, the water has nowhere to go.

Is it absorbent like a microfibre mat?

No. Silicone moves water rather than holding it, so the mat is rinsed rather than laundered and the dishes sit on a surface that drains rather than one that soaks.

Can a hot pan go on it?

The listing describes the material as heat resistant. AddToPick has not verified a temperature limit, and the single available review does not test it.

Is the mat stone or silicone?

Silicone. Some listings use the words stone drying mat, but the material is silicone and behaves accordingly.

How reliable is the information on this page?

Thin. Only one customer review exists for this product. The measurements and material claims come from the listing and are labelled as such rather than presented as tested.
